Seven of my Paper Quilts have been hanging on the bright orange walls at Darwin's for the past year. It's unreal what a whirlwind the past year has been. I installed the work last June, so it's been up for almost a year. I am grateful for the opportunity I've had to show my work at Darwin's and have enjoyed meeting up with friends at their third Thursday wine nights, for delicious sandwiches, to buy picnic supplies or for a cup of coffee late at night. I've also enjoyed receiving surprised texts from friends who have stumbled on my work when visiting the cafe.
The night that I went to the cafe to take down my work, one of the baristas that was working there said, "Wow. It's the end of an era" and smiled. While I'm also a bit melancholy that the work is coming down, I am focused on the fact that endings create space. Sometimes the space creates new opportunities immediately and sometimes the space is slower, providing time to sit quietly and reflect. I am excited to bring the work back home, to look at it with fresh eyes and to submit pieces to new shows; giving them the freedom to live in other places.
